A Bookish Day in Firle - Chapter 34 Retreats
Join us for a cosy February day retreat in the heart of the Sussex countryside.Â
We’ll gather at Firle Village Hall and indulge ourselves in two book clubs, a stroll around the village, a wholesome vegetarian lunch and some lovely company.
What could be better than a day out of life, spending time with like-minded folk, dissecting books, eating wholesome food and getting some fresh air?
We’ll be reading two books for our day together. One will be a modern work of literary fiction, while the other might be a well-loved title from years gone by, perhaps one you’ve always meant to read or would love to revisit. Both will be chosen to get us thinking, talking and, quite possibly, disagreeing!
Kelly and Carmen will be your hosts for the day, with Carmen leading our two book clubs. Carmen currently runs three book clubs at our beautiful bookshop, Chapter 34, including the very popular Nature Nurturers Book Club. If you don’t know Carmen already, she’s an avid reader who will guide us through her chosen titles with the enthusiasm and attention to detail of a seasoned forager.
The shape of the day
10am • Arrive at Firle Village Hall, settle in with a hot drink ahead of our first book club of the day, from 10.30am to midday.
Midday • Off we go for a slow countryside amble of around 45 minutes.
1pm • Back to the hall for a wholesome, homemade vegetarian soup lunch.
1.30pm • Our second book club of the day.
3pm • Time to head home, hopefully feeling rather smug.
A little more information
The village hall is heated, but please feel free to bring your slippers, a blanket and a hot water bottle to add to the cosiness levels.
You’ll need appropriate walking clothes, but nothing specialist, as it’s a pretty flat stroll. It’s more about getting outside and taking in the surroundings than getting your heart rate up. Equally, you’re very welcome to stay at the hall with a book if you’re not up for walking.
There is free street parking in Firle, and the nearest train station is Glynde.
Tickets
Your ticket includes both book club books, a homemade vegetarian soup lunch, hot drinks, biscuits/cake/fruit and, of course, a whole day of bookish loveliness.
